Program Note:
Itera is an audiovisual work that explores the evolving relationship between gesture and texture through iterative transformation. Built upon AI-generated visuals and parametric fractal structures, the piece constructs a dynamic world where sound and image continuously reshape one another. Drawing its name from iteration, Itera reveals a process in which each repetition diverges—transforming and unfolding into new visual and sonic forms. A formal dichotomy underlies the visual composition, where parametricism and AI-driven aesthetics contrast continuity with abrupt disruption. The result is a constantly shifting mechanism that invites the viewer into the liminal spaces between each transformation.
Compositional Process:
Itera was created through a hybrid workflow that combines real-time 3D visual construction and AI-assisted generation. The visual foundation was built in Unreal Engine 5, where I designed fractal-based structures and dynamic environments using parametric systems. To expand this visual language, I captured key images from various Unreal Engine scenes and used Tengr.ai to generate stylistically consistent variations. These AI-generated images served not only as visual extensions but also as conceptual reflections of the original fractal forms.
Transitions between Unreal Engine visuals and AI-generated imagery were crafted using Kling.ai, allowing for fluid transformations that visually echo the iterative concept at the core of the piece. Throughout this process, I envisioned sound and image as an integrated whole—shaping each visual transition with an ear toward the evolving sonic narrative.
The music and sound design were composed afterward but conceived simultaneously, guided by the rhythm, density, and morphology of the visual flow. Using techniques such as granular synthesis, layered textures, and iterative sonic motifs, I shaped a sound world that reinforces the recursive nature of the visuals. Every moment in Itera is the result of a tight audiovisual feedback loop, where each gesture, both sonic and visual, reflects, disrupts, and regenerates the last.
